Tips & Tricks
Essential tips for mastering the Discovery system, finding every collectible, and reaching 100% completion in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
Discovery System
Interact with everything
Each habitat has multiple discoveries. Try using Tail Flick (X) to carry the creature near every object, creature, and surface in the level — most discoveries trigger from creature-environment interactions.
Big Discovery ends the level
The Big Discovery is the final interaction in a habitat and awards 3 stars. You can still replay the habitat afterward to collect any missed discoveries.
Use Token hints when stuck
Spend Tokens at the hint board to reveal a silhouette of an undiscovered trait. Spend more to get additional details. Don't hoard Tokens — use them freely.
Replay habitats for stars
You can replay any completed habitat. If you're short on stars to unlock the next chapter, replay earlier habitats to earn the remaining stars.
Exploration
Crouch to find hidden areas
Hold ↓ while walking to crawl. Many habitats have narrow tunnels and low passages that hide Smiley Flowers and extra discoveries.
Smiley Flowers are off the main path
Smiley Flowers are always hidden — check behind objects, above platforms, and inside tunnels. Use Flutter Jump (hold A) to reach high spots.
Golden Bugs give bonus Tokens
Each habitat contains a hidden Golden Bug. Finding it gives extra Tokens. Look in out-of-the-way corners and behind scenery.
No time limit — take your time
There is no timer in any habitat. Explore thoroughly before triggering the Big Discovery, which ends the level.
Creature Mechanics
Tail Flick (X) is your main tool
Most discoveries require grabbing a creature with X and using it on something. Experiment by carrying the creature to every interactive element in the habitat.
Gobble creates eggs for throwing
Eating a creature with B produces an egg. Some discoveries require hitting specific targets with eggs — look for targets that seem out of reach.
Creature abilities change per habitat
Each chapter introduces creatures with unique abilities. The Tail Flick lets you use those abilities — a creature that floats in one context might do something different when carried to a new spot.
Bewilder Bird copies your index
In Chapter 6, the Bewilder Bird can transform into any creature you've already documented. Use it to apply earlier creatures' abilities in the Remote Isle environment.
Progression
You need 218 stars to finish the main game
The 6th chapter (Remote Isle) unlocks at 218 stars. Each habitat has multiple discoveries, so you'll naturally accumulate stars by playing thoroughly.
Post-game requires up to 500 stars
The four post-game chapters (Underground, Tallest of Trees, Miniworld, Moon) require up to 500 stars total. Replay habitats and find all discoveries to reach this.
Name your creatures — it's permanent
After completing a habitat, you name the creature. Mr. E suggests a name, but you can enter your own. The name is saved to your index permanently.
